My Favorite Large, Affordable Rugs

My favorite way to pull a room together is to a get a huge rug that truly fits the room. I aim for a foot or two of space between the rug and the walls in all directions, meaning most decent sized rooms can a handle an 8x10 or 9x12 rug. Emily Henderson has a really good post about why small rugs are a crime, but tldr, small floating rugs in the middle of a big room do you no favors. And it's amazing how a good rug can start to make the room feel cohesive, and less like furniture storage.

Most rugs of this size can be super expensive, but my favorite places for affordable rugs include Ikea, World Market, Dash & Albert, Urban Outfitters (seriously, they have nice rugs!), Overstock, Rugs USA, and Target.

The challenge with rugs at this price point is obviously quality -- you don't want a rug that sheds all over the place and requires an expensive vacuum cleaner to maintain, since that defeats the purpose. For instance, the West Elm sweater rug looked great, but it was still shedding over a year after purchase.

You also don't want something super scratchy, or a rug that falls apart. I look for rugs made of cotton or jute, which tend to have a lower pile (aka less fuzzy), but are sturdy and easy to clean. Obviously read reviews and skip anything where people complain of decomposing/shedding material. And no matter what you do, always spring for a thick, cozy rug pad (I like this one) to keep your rug from sliding all over and make it feel thicker under foot.

Below are some of my favorites -- you can click on the image of the rug to find the source:

I have three 9x12 rugs in my house, and one of them is a West Elm jute rug that's still going strong five years after purchase. It wears well, and looks better with age. My other two are wool Oriental rugs via eBay -- stay tuned for part two of rugs, the eBay edition...
